Choosing a Business Speech
Topic
George:
How did you decide on a specific topic? Because most people would think “Okay I’m an attorney and I work in the
estate planning area with wills and trusts and stuff that a whole lot of people around the planet would consider
pretty deadly dull. But you managed to turn it into an interesting presentation and you got a lot of business
out of it.
Patricia: What you have to do it first
you have to decide who you want to speak to.
The market for wills and probate and trusts and things like that
really divides out into seniors and everybody else.
Now I believe that everybody needs a will, seniors are easier to
convince that they need a will. So I decided that that would be the best market.
Of course, a lot of the Kiwanis clubs, Rotary and so forth all do
have a large number of older persons in their membership. So that worked out well too.
So I picked a topic that I thought would do well with seniors: health
care powers of attorney.
It was a brand new topic at the time. There was a lot of
publicity about it, several court cases that even went to the Supreme Court of the United States. Of course I
had a very personal interest in it due to my own health problems.
