Home Shopping Shows and Public Speaking
Watch a Home Shopping Show, Do These 9 Things, and Become a Better
Public Speaker!
Did you ever know that you can learn public speaking skills simply by watching a home shopping program?
The hosts and product presenters on these shows have mastered many of the public speaking skills that make any
speech or presentation more interesting, engaging, and ejoyable.
First, you have to understand that there are masterful marketing and advertising principles at work here.
They're always selling from the stage, a skill every speaker needs, especially in when making a persuasive
speech.
Let’s now take a look at the basic skills I learned and experienced from watching one of the most popular home
shopping networks, QVC.
1. Product knowledge. The host always has something to say and questions to ask. This usually comes from
thorough preparation, reading, research, and "picking the brain" of the product creator or promoter.
2. The host highlights the benefits of the products--not just their features and specifications. Remember the
old sales adage: "Sell the hole, not the drill..."
3. The host, usually a woman, is a real symbol of passion and enthusiasm. Anybody watching sees a sincere person
with right motives.
4. She talks to the crowd as though chatting individually with each person. As she looks in the camera when she
talks and as she communicates with guests, she looks real and original.
5. She personalizes the explanations with stories. She draws pictures in the
minds of the viewers, often by injecting her own personal experiences.
6. Her facts are fun-filled. You see the illustrations coming forth in a breezy, conversational manner.
7. She knows how to best use humor without offending or being
derogatory.
8. She knows how to endear herself by connecting with the
audience and showing them that she is someone just like them with similar needs wants and fears.
9. She uses her explanations to picture the users of her products benefitting immensely from using them. As the
models demonstrate the use of the items, the observers simply falls in love and will sure go for it.
Finally, note the words the host uses during the "pitch. They're "words that sell"--words chosen specifically
because they touch an emotion that triggers the viewer's desire to own--and enjoy the benefits of--the product.
