Tips for Doing a Long Speech in a Short Time

Making a Long Speech into a Short Speech--Fast

When you are a public speaker there will be times when you will need to take a lengthy subject and put it into a very short presentation. When this happens, it’s important that you get your main points across while still sounding professional. This can be difficult for many speakers and requires some practice. This is especially true if you really enjoy talking because you don’t have time to waste saying anything unnecessary. Here are some tips on doing a long presentation in a short period of time.

Normally, a short presentation consists of about ten to fifteen minutes. That is a very short time so you have to plan carefully. Allow about one minute for both your opening and closing statements. Use the rest of the time to make your point in a way that will be remembered long after the presentation is over.

The first thing that you need to realize is that your audience will not remember everything that you say in a long presentation anyway. They will remember the things that you stress as the most important parts of the speech. Therefore, when you are taking a long presentation and making it a short one, you need to pick out the most important points that you need to make.

Start with an outline of all the points that you need to make and list them in the order in which you want to present them to the audience. Only pick out the most important facts that will help the audience understand the point you are trying to make. Use these to build your speech so you can stay on track. When saying less is the agenda, it’s important that you stress what’s important but do so in an interesting way that will capture their attention and keep them on the edge of their seat.

It’s even possible to tell a short story as long as you don’t stray from the topic. You don’t have time to get side tracked or your audience will go home without the important information they need. They will be wondering what the speech was all about instead of taking home some useful information they can actually use.

After making your outline and getting everything in order, make sure you stick with the plan. If you stray from the plan you will run out of time before you have a chance to get back on track. Following these tips will help you make the most out of all the time you have, even if it’s only ten or fifteen minutes.
