Negative Audiences and Public Speaking
Professional Ways to Deal with a Negative
Audience
Every public speaker will deal with a negative audience at some point in time. Usually there will be one person or
a small group of people that want to cause trouble and give you a hard time. How you deal with this type of
situation is very important. It will reflect on your professionalism and determine how serious your audience takes
you.
When dealing with a negative audience it’s vital to your reputation and your career that you act professional
and respectable. So how do you make this happen? How do you control your urge to respond negatively to this type of
audience? The first thing that needs to be understood is that you have a presentation to give and specific material
to cover regardless of how the audience is acting. Therefore, your first goal is to address your subject and give
your speech even when the audience appears to be unwilling to listen to what you are saying.
The best way to accomplish this is by having a positive altitude and believing in yourself. You have to know
that you have the ability to stay professional and get the job done under any circumstance. That will help you stay
on the right track throughout the entire presentation. Having knowledge is the key to a positive attitude. If you
are truly knowledgeable about the topic you are discussing, then you have a very powerful weapon at your disposal.
Therefore, know everything there is to know about the subject from the main important parts to what may seem like
an insignificant point. The more you know the more confident you will be.
Be prepared for any question that may arise. Think of questions and answers that may come up to help better
prepare yourself for dealing with the audience. You should never avoid answering any question pertaining to the
topic you are covering. By answering all questions it will increase your credibility and show that you truly are an
expert in the field you are discussing.
Always maintain control over the situation. Don’t respond in a negative way even when you are being approached
negatively. Don’t show emotional feelings that confirm the negativity is making you upset or disrupting your train
of thought. Instead, you need to stay focused on your topic and keep control.
If asked a negative question or if a member of the audience is making negative comments don’t allow yourself to
respond with a negative reaction. This will cause other members of the audience to lose confidence in you and turn
their positive attitudes into negative ones. You are the professional on the subject and as long as you remember
that and act professional, you will be able to keep the respect and the attention of the audience.
Use each encounter you have with a negative audience as a learning experience. Do not focus on the situation and
the fact that you had a negative audience. Concentrate on how you dealt with it, what you learned and what you can
do to improve the way you reacted. Then use this information to deal with new situations better in the future.
Your goal as a public speaker is to reach and connect with as many members of the audience as you possibly can.
Don’t worry so much about the negative members of the audience but concentrate more on the ones you did connect
with and try to make it a positive learning experience for them. By being professional under any circumstance, you
can make a positive impact even on the negative members or trouble makers of the group. This is one of the
qualities that will make you a great professional public speaker.
